New York, New York – you don’t have to tell me twice! The city that never sleeps won’t let you down… from the world’s greatest hotels, exciting dining and sky high shopping experiences. New York is sure to excite and dazzle you from the moment you make your entrance in this vibrant, glamorous city.
When I’m in town I head directly to Crosby Street Hotel… my go-to down town boutique hotel and home away from home. I’ve been coming for years and I love its stylishly quirky and comfortable Kit Kemp interiors, lavish bathrooms, and beds to dream the days away in. Its location in SoHo is perfect (diagonally across from one of my favourite restaurants Balthazar and one block behind Broadway), and the hotel’s very own Crosby Bar downstairs will have you rubbing shoulders with celebs who are staying in-house or just might be previewing their latest film in the private cinema downstairs. It’s so cool it hurts. Keep your eye on Firmdale Hotels’ newest Manhattan opening, The Whitby Hotel – scheduled to open later this year midtown – this one just might take the cake!
My other favourite is The Greenwich Hotel – Robert De Niro owns this A-lister bolthole… its compact studios and lofty warehouse style suites make for a decidedly decadent NYC stay, and its TriBeCa penthouse created by Belgian designer Axel Vervoordt, Japanese architect Tatsuro Miki in close collaboration with the hotel’s partners Ira Drukier and Robert De Niro is a show stopper. This penthouse includes a 4,000 sq ft private multi- levelled terrace including lush gardens with Wisteria – wrapped pergolas, multiple seating and dining areas, a spa pool and an outdoor wood-burning fire place. Could this be the perfect place to party in private with your nearest and dearest?
Other hotels to consider might be the rather glamorous Baccarat Hotel located mid-town where even the bathroom glasses are Baccarat and the bar downstairs makes for a glam cocktail pit stop too. Or try Ian Schrager’s latest contribution to the luxe hotel landscape – the New York EDITION that will satisfy those with modern design tendencies. Be sure not to miss Brit transplant Jason Atherton’s restaurant The Clocktower housed inside.
Speaking of restaurants… I always make time to eat at Tutto Il Giorgio, the Hampton’s hotspot that has become the latest Tribeca it-restaurant (and owned by Gabby Karan – Donna’s daughter) where I go for the crunchy calamari and a perfect Branzino. I also love Santina for beachy Italian resort vibes under Manhattan’s High Line, all perfectly set in a gorgeous glass box. Then there’s Danny Meyer’s new hotspot Untitled inside The Whitney Museum of American Art so you can combine your day spent gallery hopping with dining in style right here. Don’t miss “The Polo Bar”, Ralph Lauren’s New York successor to his Paris outpost Ralph’s St Germain, it’s a glamorous urban townhouse setting serving American classics such as their signature crab cakes and a herb crusted veal chop pounded to perfection. Here you’ll look good against the rich walnut wood panelled walls surrounded by model-esque cowboys and cowgirls – oh so very RL!
ATTENTION TO RETAIL
Shopping comes easy in New York with Crosby Street in SoHo becoming the new menswear mecca. Affectionately referred to as “BroHo” or the “manly mile” by the locals… the five blocks running this cobbled street is the new epicentre of menswear shopping – drop into Carhartt Wip for a street style update or Saturdays which serves up a selection of surf inspired clothes as well as a mean latte and then drop into Fellow Barber for a low fade and beard trim. Further along Crosby Street, bracelet and jewellery designer Miansai can hook you up with their cult screw cuffs (these look fab as cufflinks too).
For custom suiting take a look at Suitable NYC for modern essentials thoughtfully considered and custom fit, just to you – they even craft custom linen shorts in their savvy modern cut. Get fitted at their New York studio – 1133 Broadway.
Oh… and I wouldn’t dare leave town without doing a haul at Craft Atlantic – the designers of such a fine travel wardrobe that can take you from the plane straight to lunch. Their Warwick Technowool Travel Blazer and Airstream Jogger pants are cult travel classics.
