I recently spent a wonderfully luxurious weekend at Saffire Freycinet being wined, dined and pampered in Relais & Chateaux affiliated luxury. Perfectly positioned on the Freycinet Peninsula at Coles Bay in Tasmania (2.5 hours drive from “hot right now” Hobart), breathtaking views abound from this super glam retreat. Front and centre are The Hazards, these two massive eroded blocks of pink granite are an imposing and spectacular sight day or night and anchor the view from Saffire lodge. Spectacular to say the least… you can even climb them if your so inclined. I walked the track to the famous Wineglass Bay lookout one day, it’s one walk you shouldn’t miss… if I can do it, anyone can do it!
CHECK-IN
Every suite enjoys a breathtaking view of The Hazards, and are situated side by side, privately nestled in native bush. Wild luxury does come with luxe amenities such as complimentary fully stocked mini bars (yes the Tasmanian Pinot Grigio is included in your rate and replenished daily) and bathrooms that go on for days… think double showers, deep bath and piles of fluffy towels. The contemporary designer furnishings do make you feel a bit spesh… put simply these suites are built for luxuriating… and trust me, I know what I am talking about!
THE EXPERIENCE
The perfect stay includes engaging and connecting with Freycinet’s natural and stunning attractions. Most activities are complimentary in your rate and you can’t miss the Freycinet Marine Farm visit. Waders and all, we waded out into the stunning wetland to pull fresh Pacific’s straight from the water… and shucked them then and there. Enjoyed with either fresh lime or Ponzu sauce we washed them down with some perfectly chilled Pirie sparkling. It was a signature experience for me and one I won’t forget … they were the best oysters I have ever eaten!
Daily spa treatments at Spa Saffire are also a must here, I enjoyed the best facial I have ever had (men’s treatments are their specialty) and with all of the Spa Saffire therapists trained in Europe, it is truly a world class retreat.
So a few things to keep in mind while you are in residence… Saffire is “D” for Deluxe but there’s no need to flaunt the family jewels… laid back chic wins out here. Delicious food (focusing on home grown local ingredients) will be eaten in abundance… it’s fully inclusive in your rate and believe me when I say you won’t go hungry! Lunch and dinner are complimented by a worthy local (& global) wine list… I stuck to Tassie whites all weekend that didn’t disappoint with the Pooley Coal River Pinot Grigio being my fave!
And the most fabulous luxe amenity for guests of Saffire is the Saffire Lounge at Hobart Airport. This lounge is exclusive for Saffire guests and is open from 9am – 5pm daily for your convenience. On arrival you will be met by one of the charming Saffire team and escorted to the lounge while they collect your bags before setting you on your way and on departure, enjoy the privacy of the lounge while you wait for you flight back to reality sipping a yummy Tassie sparkling. Its luxe all the way baby!
