Launceston has some very fine dining options and you can easily fill a few days eating your way around this riverside town. Best location for river views is at Stillwater Restaurant where I celebrated New Years Eve and enjoyed THE best degustation menu I have ever had the pleasure of eating.

Highlights of the evening? … fireworks on the river right outside the window in front of our table, Guillaume our fabulous waiter who made it all happen so effortlessly and the piece de resistance… the third course of Blue eye travalla with spanner crab and lemon grass roulade, shiitake mushroom broth, fish crackle and puffed rice… HEAVEN.

It was truly superb and you can’t miss this restaurant, Gourmet Traveller have recently awarded Stillwater a coveted star in its 2013 Restaurant Guide AND Launceston’s own Craig Will, Exec Chef of Stillwater and Black Cow Restaurants was recently a finalist in Australia’s Country Chef of the Year Awards . It’s great, trust me.

Stillwater is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner… call them for details and to make a reservation.

Black Cow Bistro
Black Cow Bistro

You should also a make time to eat at Black Cow Bistro, owned and operated by the team from Stillwater. It is located in the historic Art Deco Luck’s Butchery shop which has been glammed up into a fab fresh restaurant, and serving what else??… perfectly executed beef any way you like it in a casual bistro style atmosphere.

Josef Chromy Estate Vineyard
Josef Chromy Vineyard

For a fab lunch in the vineyards… you can’t go wrong at Josef Chromy Vineyard situated just outside Launceston (and nearby Red Feather Inn). Picture perfect gardens and vineyards rolling over the landscape go on for days. The food is as fab and breezy as the service by a young knowledgeable crew and bookings are recommended to avoid a wait. Oh and their Pinot Gris isn’t bad either so don’t forget to order a box to ship home … and you too can take a taste of Tasmania home with you.
