High Country Style

Powerhouse Hotel Tamworth by Rydges

Who knew Australia’s next level of stylish hotel would start its incarnation in Tamworth, New South Wales?

Regional Australia is really having its moment right now and with the opening of the fabulous Powerhouse Hotel Tamworth by Rydges, there is now a super sexy place to stay on your next country-style getaway.

I drove up from Sydney and stopped at Murruundi for quick whirl around Michael Reid’s ultra chic gallery and much needed flat white. Their homewares store and cafe are stocked with everything from R.M Williams boots and hats to African baskets and Swiss Army blankets. I know … who knew?

Another hour on and you’ll hit Tamworth, a bustling regional city full of charm where home for the weekend was the Powerhouse Hotel Tamworth by Rydes, here an original drive-in motel has been given an ultra-luxe make over (take note regional Australia, come to Tamworth and see what can be done with the humble drive-in motel!)

Sleep In Style

From top to bottom, this property has been given an update and a new lease of life. Beautiful interiors by Paul Kelly Design make you feel you could almost BE in New York City! Think wood panelling, leather headboards in teal, designer fabrics and brass metal work. It’s an extensive makeover with not a detail missed.

Cloud like beds set up with fluffy pillows and pressed sheets add to the comfy and quiet sophistication. Rooms have also been soundproofed so you are assured of a silent stay. I loved the large in-room TV’s too.

The serviced apartments and 3 bedroom villa are all decorated and designed in the same high style so its perfect for a little family a vacay too!

Don’t Miss

Now, if you think a hotel in Tamworth high on NYC style sounds out of place, think again. They have the warm country-town hospitality turned up and the restaurant on site serves the BEST steaks I have ever eaten!

Locally grown and aged Jack’s Creek beef features on the menu here at the hotel’s in-house restaurant The Workshop Kitchen (the New York Cut Sirloin was seriously good) – here the food is cooked over wood fired grills, fired up daily with local ironbark imparting the food with a delicious smoked flavour. Peruse the Dinner Menu here – but prepare to have food envy! Oh and please book, it’s always booked out!

Honestly I would drive back to Tamworth just to eat here (and of course sleep soundly in one of their designer rooms!)

Must Visit

Just 5 hours from Sydney the drive is long so I suggest you flop at the Powerhouse Hotel for two or three nights and use it a base to explore Tamworth and beyond.

Must visit: the charming town of Nundle – home of the Nundle Woollen Mill and Odgers & McClelland Exchange Stores (I picked up one of their covetable handmade dust pan brushes made of horse hair).

It’s also worth booking the Glasshouse Restaurant at Goonnoo Goonnoo Station for breakfast lunch or dinner and best coffee in town was hands down enjoyed at Camp Grounds Tamworth.

All in all, I think the new Powerhouse hotel Tamworth has elevated this city’s game – fine dining, chic accommodation and friendly service are just part of the charm.

Head out in country style soon and contact me to book your very own stay at Powerhouse Tamworth by Rydges.

*I stayed as a guest of Powerhouse Hotel by Rydges in April, 2021.
